The driving concept of this project involves an architecture which facilitates the massive movement produced by the fairs and, bears in mind the needs of the visiting public to find information and services within the grounds.

On the grounds there are 8 pavilions and an auditorium. They are organized along a central axis of approximately one kilometre in length, guiding visitors beween the various pavilions. The northern access point, situated at Plaça Europa, will connect directly to the subway station Fira on lines L2 and L9, and to the parking structures.

At this access point, a vestibule of organic form was designed, kindly inviting visitors to enter the grounds.

The other access point, situated at the southern extreme, will be made up of an enormous red cube set upon a public square of large proportions, extending to the Passeig de Zona Franca .

The architectural design, by the reknowned Japanese architect Toyo Ito, is based on recurring organic forms which bring to mind elements found in nature such as rivers. This is the concept behind the so-called central axis and it is to be found at the very core of the project. Water, natural light, well-conceived interior illumination and an adequate, functional organization, accessible to the different areas of the grounds, all dominate this design.

A key factor upon bringing about this project has been the urban localization of the new fairgrounds. This placement, accessible from the new subway lines L2 and L9, will permit the fairgrounds' incorporation into the city, thus maximixing the influx of economy which generates the total number of visitors.

Despite its expansion to the Gran Via fairgrounds, Fira de Barcelona will maintain its emblematic facilities. The model for double grounds will be beneficial, given that it will allow the emblematic character of Montjuic to be potentialized as a trademark, consolidating the complementary autonomy of the two sites and ensuring that certain fairs may be held on their respective dates, and allowing for the growing demand. The existence of the two sites will mean an improved calendar administration for the fairs.
